Why these tones

Every Thai number, however large, is built from these 18 syllables — and between them they demonstrate the whole tone rule: all three consonant classes, ไม้เอก and ไม้โท, live and dead endings, two leading-ห pairs, an unwritten vowel and a silent การันต์.

mid

Low class, live, no mark — the tone you get when nothing pushes it.

low

Two routes: a high- or mid-class syllable ending in a stop, or ไม้เอก on a high-class one.

falling

Three routes to one tone — ไม้โท on high or mid class, ไม้เอก on low.

high

Low class with ไม้โท.

rising

High class, live, no mark — one rule, four numbers.
